Customs Clearance for Yachts at Limassol Port

Bringing a yacht into Cyprus — or keeping one in Cypriot waters — means getting the customs position right. The correct procedure depends on the vessel's flag, the owner's residency, and how the yacht will be used. We handle the customs side end-to-end at Limassol Port, so your time in Cyprus is spent on the water, not at a customs counter.

Scope: We focus on customs clearance and procedures. For VAT structuring, leasing arrangements, or flag registration, we work alongside your tax or legal advisor — complementing, not replacing, your existing team.

Temporary Admission for Yachts in Cyprus

If your yacht is registered under a non-EU flag and you are resident outside the EU, Temporary Admission lets you keep the vessel in EU and Cypriot waters without paying import VAT — for up to 18 months, extendable to a maximum of 24 months if the yacht is laid up with customs agreement. The yacht must be for private use and must not be sold, chartered, or transferred to an EU resident during this period.

Importantly, it is residency — not nationality — that decides eligibility. We lodge and manage the Temporary Admission, advise on what evidence to keep on board, and handle the discharge (re-export or payment of import VAT) before the period ends.

Up to 18 Months

Standard Temporary Admission period for non-EU-flagged yachts owned by non-EU residents. Extendable to 24 months if the vessel is laid up with customs agreement.

Residency Is Decisive

Eligibility is based on the owner's residency outside the EU — not nationality. We assess each case and advise on the correct documentation to support the application.

Private Use Only

The yacht must be used exclusively for private/pleasure purposes. It must not be sold, chartered, or transferred to an EU resident during the Temporary Admission period.

Paying Import VAT & "VAT-Paid" Status

When a yacht is imported for use in the EU, import VAT becomes payable, after which the vessel holds "VAT-paid" status and can circulate freely within the EU. We prepare and lodge the import declaration, calculate the VAT due, and arrange clearance through Limassol Customs.

If your yacht was previously VAT-paid, exported, and is being re-imported by the same owner within three years without significant upgrades, Returned Goods Relief may apply — we will assess and document it.

1

Assessment

We review the vessel's history, flag, and owner's status to determine the correct customs procedure.

2

Declaration

We prepare and lodge the import declaration with Limassol Customs, calculating VAT due accurately.

3

Clearance

Once VAT is settled, the vessel holds VAT-paid status and can circulate freely throughout the EU.

Union Status & T2L

Proving your yacht's customs status matters when moving within and into the EU. We help establish and document Union goods status (including T2L where required). Recent EU guidance (May 2026) presumes pleasure craft operating within the EU to hold Union status, with flag or owner nationality alone no longer determining it — though member-state practice still varies, so proper documentation remains the safe course.

Note: The May 2026 EC guidance is not binding and member-state practice varies. Proper documentation of Union status remains advisable for any vessel moving between EU ports or re-entering EU waters.

Yacht Refit & Spare-Parts Clearance

Bringing a yacht into Cyprus for refit or repair is handled differently: it falls under Inward Processing Relief (IPR), not Temporary Admission. We clear vessels entering for refit, and handle the customs clearance of spare parts, equipment, and components imported for vessels under repair — accurately classified, with the applicable reliefs claimed where eligible.

Limassol's refit capability combined with on-the-spot customs handling means fewer delays and lower landed cost. This is a niche area that requires precise classification and procedure — we handle it routinely.

Inward Processing Relief

Refit and repair work is handled under IPR — a distinct procedure from Temporary Admission. We lodge the correct authorisation and manage the process end-to-end.

Spare Parts & Equipment

We clear spare parts, components, and equipment imported for vessels under repair — correctly classified with applicable duty reliefs claimed.

Frequently Asked Questions — Yacht Customs Cyprus

How long can a non-EU yacht stay in Cyprus without paying VAT?

Up to 18 months under Temporary Admission, extendable to a maximum of 24 months if the yacht is laid up with the agreement of customs. Before the period ends, the yacht must either pay import VAT or leave EU waters.

Do I have to pay VAT on my yacht in Cyprus?

It depends on your residency and the yacht's status. Non-EU residents with a non-EU-flagged yacht used privately may avoid import VAT under Temporary Admission. Otherwise, import VAT is payable on importation. Residency — not nationality — is decisive. We assess each case.

What is Temporary Admission for yachts?

A customs procedure that allows a non-EU-resident owner to keep a non-EU-flagged yacht in EU/Cyprus waters for private use without paying import VAT, for up to 18 months (extendable to 24 if laid up).

What's the difference between "VAT-paid" and Temporary Admission?

A VAT-paid yacht has had import VAT settled and can circulate freely in the EU indefinitely. Temporary Admission is a time-limited relief for non-EU residents that avoids import VAT but comes with conditions and a deadline to pay VAT or leave.

Can I bring my yacht into Cyprus for a refit?

Yes. Refit and repair are handled under Inward Processing Relief rather than Temporary Admission. We clear the vessel and any spare parts or equipment imported for the works.

How long does yacht customs clearance take in Cyprus?

Most clearances are completed within 1–3 working days, depending on documentation and any inspection.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Each vessel's position is assessed individually.
